Jurix sketches the career of James A. Bland as student, House of Representatives page, songwriter, and travelling minstrel performer. He wrote over 500 songs and ballads and published 15 songs in German. Jurix notes she is trying to finish the story of Bland's life "with the assistance of W.C. Handy, the father of the blues."
